Remembering Jean-Baptiste Pompallier, FIrst Catholic Bishop of Aotearoa New Zealand
13 January 1838 is when Bishop Pompallier celebrated the First Mass at the home of Thomas and Mary Poynton. The Church later acquired ownership of this 1 acre property.
There is an Annual Mass to celebrate the anniversary of this First Mass on the closest Sunday to the anniversary each year. Weather permitting the service is held outside at Totara Point. Alternatively the service will be held at St Mary’s Church, Motuti.
21 December 1871
Bishop Pompallier dies in France and is buried at Puteaux, near Paris.
For many years New Zealand Catholics, especially Maori from the Hokianga, request the return of his body to the scene of his missionary labours from 1838-1869.
The Bishop’s remains return to New Zealand and begin to journey around the country.
